This Tutorial from “ZBRUSH at PIXOLOGIC” covers the basics of using MicroMesh to render out a normal sphere as a sphere that takes on a look of individual gems. MicroMesh will convert polygons of the sphere into any selected mesh, in this case a gem at render time. Please note that when using MicroMesh ZBrush will be rendering the number of polygons of the sphere times the number of polygons in the MicroMesh.
